Jamii Africa is partnering with the DC government Department of Health to provide FREE medical exams to women  residents of the District for the early detection of breast and cervical cancer.

Fact Sheet

1. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Nearly one in eight U.S. women develops breast cancer some time in her life.  Scientists do not understand exactly what causes breast cancer.  Fortunately, breast cancer is very treatable if detected early.

2. Cervical Cancer is malignancy in the cervix, the narrow opening at the lower end of the female uterus, or womb, that leads into the vagina. The disease most commonly affects women between the ages of 40 and 55. Cervical cancer can be prevented by screening for precancerous cells, and it can be cured if detected in an early stage.

Which Exams Help In Early Detection of Breast and Cervical Cancer?

Breast Cancer

The early detection exam for breast cancer is a mammogram.  A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast.  It can find breast cancer that is too small for you or your doctor or nurse to feel.  Studies show that if you are in your forties or older, having a mammogram every 1-2 years could save your life.  This test is advised not just once, but for a lifetime.

Cervical Cancer

The early detection of cervical cancer is done using a Pap test.  A few cells are taken from your cervix for lab tests.  These tests check for changes in the cells that could indicated pre-cancer or cancer.  When detected early, cell changes can be treated before cervical cancer ever develops.
